Working on Stroom
- Open source
- Stroom is open source under Apache 2.0, so the code you write is public and reviewed in the open.
- The product and the people who run it
- Most of the work is on Stroom itself: ingest, pipelines, indexing, search, dashboards and the web interface. Some of it is with customers, helping them get their own data into shape.
- Data that matters
- Stroom is used where security data has to be kept complete and searchable for years, often on infrastructure the customer runs themselves, including closed networks.
- Remote
- The team works remotely across the UK.
Remote, across the UK
These roles are for people with an existing right to work in the UK.
Software Developer
UK, remote
Employee · Full-time
Work on Stroom itself: the open-source platform that collects, normalises and searches security data for organisations that cannot afford to lose any of it.
You will take features from idea to release across a large, established Java codebase, and work with the customers who run Stroom when a problem needs someone who knows the code.
If you have a proven track record of delivering quality software, we would love to hear from you.
What you will do
- Design, build and test new features in Stroom, and review your colleagues’ changes
- Investigate and fix issues raised by customers, from an error in a log to a slow query
- Build pipelines, XSLT and dashboards that turn a customer’s raw data into something searchable
- Help improve how Stroom is built, tested and released
Requirements
- 2 years’ commercial software development experience
- Strong Java programming
- Comfortable finding your way around a large existing codebase

Junior Software Developer
UK, remote
Employee · Full-time
Are you looking to build your knowledge of programming into a career in software development? This role puts you on a real open-source product from the start.
You will learn how Stroom works from the people who build it: how data arrives, how pipelines normalise it, and how it is indexed and searched. Your work goes into the product, with experienced developers reviewing it and helping you along.
If you have Java programming experience and are enthusiastic about taking your career to the next level, this might be the role for you.
What you will do
- Build and test features and fixes in Stroom, alongside more experienced developers
- Learn Stroom’s pipelines, XSLT and query language by using them on real problems
- Write tests and documentation as part of every change
Requirements
- Java programming experience
- An interest in how large systems store and search data

What you will do
- Build, test and review features and fixes in Stroom
